Winter Landscape

Oil pastel was created in the 20th century by two school owners in Japan. What they came up with was a cross between a crayon and soft or dry pastel. This was considered the ideal material to teach children to be creative by creating free form art. Oil pastels are different from soft pastels. They have more of an oil paint consistency, but are harder. Soft pastels are more like chalk. Oil pastels adhere to surfaces and are not easily washed or smudged off. Oil pastels can be used on many different surfaces. Many interesting art pieces can be created that might not be possible with other media.

Pastel painting is a picture in which the paper is completely covered (when the paper is exposed through the pastel, it is known as a pastel sketch).  

Children of grade 3b painted their Winter Landscapes using oil pastels, paints, soft pastels. They have also tried a mixed art technique. The pictures they made were inspired by the famous painting Winter Landscape by Pieter Bruegel.
