Class Project: Clothes. What does it feel like to be a fashion designer?

Becoming fashion designers: Children are divided into 5 groups. Each group is given a picture showing a face of a person. The pictures that have been used in the project shown: an Inuit woman, Scottish man, Indian woman, Polish girl, and Masai warrior. During the lesson all the children have an opportunity to look at the pictures presenting different kinds of clothes. The teacher can ask students to describe each face. Then they try to identify where the person may come from (What part of the world? What country?). The teacher may give them some hints. Later on each group uses a large sheet of paper. They may choose one person in each group to lie down, while other students trace his/her body with a crayon. Once they have learnt whom they are going to design the outfit for (e.g. Scottish man), they divide work among themselves, they paste the face on their poster, think about the clothes the person may wear. Their task is to design the outfit that would include the elements of the traditional clothing, but at the same time will introduce new patterns, shapes and other decorations. It is important for children to cooperate, work in such a way so that they do not interrupt each other.
